Choosing the Right Snowmobile Insurance Policy

6 October 2008 1 views No Comment

You have insurance on your home, car and motorcycle. It certainly makes sense to ensure you have reliable insurance coverage on your snowmobile also. Laws regarding snowmobile insurance vary from state to state but most states have a provision requiring some type of liability snowmobile insurance in case of accident. The coverage minimums may vary, though, so it is important to ensure you know what they are.

If you are visiting an area on vacation but have your snowmobile licensed, registered and insured in another state, there may be special provisions you need to adhere to such as a temporary license. So, you should check the requirements of each state before traveling there with your snowmobile.

Regardless of whether or not snowmobile coverage is required or whether or not there are certain minimums that should be met, it is often advisable to obtain more snowmobile indemnity than simply the minimum required by law. When dealing with a craft that is operated at high speeds on dangerous terrain, you want to be sure you are fully protected in case of accident or liability.

Additionally, the snowmobile itself is a large investment so you want to make sure you have a suitable snowmobile plan in place to cover repairs or replacement if they are ever needed.

Nowadays, many of the major insurance carriers also provide policies for snowmobiles and other recreational vehicles. Before choosing a policy, make sure you get quotes from different carriers and compare coverage as well as price.

Also, you should consider if there are additional vehicles or accessories that should be covered under your snowmobile policy. Some carriers provide for this and others do not. For example, if you have after market parts on your snowmobile or if you use your snowmobile to pull a sled, you may want to get those covered as well.

Speak with a representative at the insurance companies you are considering and compile a list of quotes. Decide on the policy that best suits your individual needs, state requirements and your budget.

Often insurance companies that already underwrite your other vehicles will give significant discounts for packaging more under your policy so even if your existing insurance company does not carry snowmobile insurance, you may want to consider getting a quote for your snowmobile as well as your other vehicles to see if there will be a savings in that regard.
